Item #34 – Blast Balls

Life in NKC gets better every day. But the vast plains that surround our new home hide dangers new and old. The recent spate of attacks from feral dog packs inspired our latest creation.

Interviews with victims, survivors and by-standers reveals an unfortunate trend. Packs are often successful in their attack for one simple reason – the people they attack have trouble disassociating their domesticated past. They see pets approaching, and do not recognize the danger until it’s far too late.

Make no mistake, feral dogs are NOT pets, and have not been pets for some time. Most were born in the wild, raised on their own, and share only the physical features of what used to be man’s best friend.

We understand the compulsion not to hurt dogs. No one wants to kill unless they have to – this world is harsher than the one we once had, but it would be harsher still if we let slip our humanity with our former civilization.

Blast Balls are an effective, humane way to deal with feral dog packs. Each has a core that uses the same technology that police tasers used in the Days Before. It’s activated by pressure, namely the bite of a curious dog.

And they’re so simple to use! Throw the ball, and dogs will chase. Feral or not, there are instincts bred down for eons that practically force them to grab the ball. The dog bites down, the charge is released and the Dane goes down.

Once the charge is dispelled, we’ve found most packs will spend some time investigating the ball anyway. All of this provides ample time for a person to make good his/her escape. The charges are non-lethal, so the zapped dog will be back on its feet soon enough.

It’s recommended that the balls be sold in groups. The more that are thrown, the more dogs will be zapped. Also, the longer the pack fights over the remaining chargeless balls.

Blast Balls are a huge step forward for the Post-Civ world – a non-lethal solution to a deadly problem. We’ve spent too long meting out violence in response to violence. If we’re to reclaim even an inch of the heights from which we once viewed the world, we must find smarter ways to handle the world’s dangers.

Blast Balls are a product. They’re supposed to make us money. But they represent something more, something bigger. They’re a step toward something other than mere survival.

If you frame it that way to your citizens and friends, they will sell themselves. And maybe some sturdier piece of humanity will go with them.
